ஐதராபாத் ஹலீம்....!

Do you know Hyderabad’s Haleem is the first GI-tagged Meat Dish?

Haleem was granted a Geographical Indication tag long ago, and it was renewed in October 2022.

Haleem holds a special place in the hearts and palates of Hyderabadis. People in Hyderabad would never want to miss Haleem in the month of Ramadan.

Previously, Haleem outlets were only found in Hyderabad, but now they can be seen in towns and cities across the country during the month of Ramadan.

But what makes it so special?

The dish made its way to Hyderabad through the Arab diaspora during the Nizam rule and underwent a transformation influenced by the local culinary style.

It is particularly consumed in the Islamic month of Ramadan during Iftar (the evening meal that breaks the day-long fast) as it is high in calories.

Haleem, by definition, is a slow-cooked dish made with meat (usually mutton or chicken), broken wheat, lentils, and a variety of spices and aromatics. It is continuously pounded to achieve its signature smooth consistency.

In October 2022, Hyderabadi Haleem won the 'Most Popular GI' award in the food category.

What are the best places to have Haleem in Hyderabad?
