Al-Marsad Newspaper: An elderly Syrian man returned to his home in Damascus after long years spent outside the country, to reveal a private library he had hidden behind a wall inside the house before leaving Syria.

According to the circulating account, the man hid his library in late 2011 before departing for Kuwait, fearing the discovery of books that were banned at the time.

The circulating footage shows the man removing the wall he had concealed his library behind throughout those years, revealing shelves containing a large collection of books he had kept out of sight.

Documented reports from that period indicate that censorship under Bashar al-Assad's rule encompassed political, religious, and literary works, with some library owners hiding banned books or selling them secretly. Meanwhile, Syrians spoke of their fear of imprisonment for possessing certain publications or even sharing quotes from them.
